Position Summary

  • Familiarity with and/or exposure with gene therapy / editing and genetic assays, analytics and interpretation, including Sanger sequencing, NGS, qPCR, etc.
  • Comfort in overseeing in vitro disease model development, functional assay development, and characterization (for both primary and immortalized lines)
  • Translational background in vivo disease modeling/selection as well as biochemical and functional phenotyping, which may include one or more of the following
    • Genetic, molecular, cellular, and physiology characterization
    • Viral vector delivery model development and biodistribution study design and execution
    • Cell-based therapy / implantation study design and execution
  • Experience with sourcing, assessing, scoping work, tracking performance and ensuring delivery of services from CROs, academic alliance partners, and external expert consultants
  • Pre-existing disease specific knowledge in musculoskeletal system and/or neurologic system (CNS, PNS) and/or willingness to build up expertise quickly, to include working knowledge of therapeutic pipelines in gene therapy for major diseases and of prominent KOLs in academia and industry 

Scope of Responsibilities 

  • Develop and present regenerative medicine research strategy including
    • Build vision and operational plan / resourcing needs for a portfolio of internal programs and external research collaborations, and periodically refresh based on data, experience
    • Communicate strategy to team, other TA directors, R&D leadership and the business, to enable within and across team and function collaboration
    • Participate in periodic leadership portfolio planning, and provide strategic inputs to enable leadership decision-making
    • Work with business to identify, assess, and prioritize new external business opportunities as needed
  • Build and empower the team to execute the research strategy including
    • Support technical and interpersonal skill development of research associates, scientists, and Senior Scientists, working hand in hand with Program / Alliance management
    • Lead talent recruitment and development for team
    • Work with scientists to refine and prepare output for internal leadership presentations and for external communications in collaboration with Alliance management / Business Development
    • Overseeing external KOL / alliance relationship management for program-related projects, by managing research collaboration(s) and consultants


  • PhD with 10+ years of post-doctoral training combined with industry experience
  • Experience in the musculoskeletal and/or neurodegenerative therapeutic area, background with mammalian gene therapy, or related field and a broad range of cell and molecular biology techniques
  • Prior group lead or oversight of scientific projects, programs and people
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate with peers and effectively work in a team-oriented environment
  • Scientifically rigorous, highly organized, and with significant attention to detail
